Leonard da Vinci was born Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci on the 15th of April 1452 in Vinci, Florence (present day Italy) Being a scientist, sculpture, writer, and painter amongst many other things. He has been described as one of the greatest painters of all time. Although a renowned painter, Leonardo was also described as an inventor. His works the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper are the most famous and reproduced portraits and religious paintings of all time. Their fame approached only by the Creation of Adam by Michelangelo. Although some what mysterious, Leonardo has been described as the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. He died on the 2nd of May 1519 at the age of aged 67

Michelangelo was born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni on the 6th of March 1475 in Caprese ( Italy) His family had for several generations been small-scale bankers in Florence, but his father failed to maintain the bank's financial status, and held occasional government positions. At the time of Michelangelo's birth, his father was the judicial administrator of the small town of Caprese. Several months after Michelangelo's birth the family returned to Florence where Michelangelo was raised. At a tender age, he moved in with another family during the illness and later death of his mother Francesca. While his father wanted him to study grammar, his real interest lies in the arts. His father considered this below the family's status and tried to discourage him. However, Michelangelo prevailed and was apprenticed at the age of thirteen to Domenico Ghirlandaio the most fashionable painter in Florence at the time. This was the early beginning; he would go on to study more, excelled and started making name for himself at a very young age. Michelangelo worked on so many projects and some he never finished because of the vast number of projects from clients that he could not turn down. He was the undisputed master of drawing in the 16th century Italy. He was one of the greatest sculptors of the Italian Renaissance and one of its greatest painters and architects. His work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling is a masterpiece and one of the most famous work of art till date. He wrote a lot of poems during his life time and excelled in poetry, sculpture, painting, and architecture. He died on the 18th of February 1564 at the age of 88

Both works are great and incomparable to one and another, but with knowledge that da vinci was not only a fantastic artist and sculptor but also one of the most intelligent people to ever walk the planet, he wins my vote.

Leonardo's and Michelangelo's artworks are great and historic, but Leonardo not only created amazing art and was recognized for his intelligence, but also he is the man that construed designs for tanks, helicopters, solar power and calculators, all things that we use today. Leonardo wins in my opinion.
Both are the greatest artist that the world has ever seen!But,I pick Michelangelo,not because I am a fan,but because he changed the way that bodies were painted,from fragile bodies to more strong,titanic ones
Art wise....Michelangelo wins hands down. He had the ability to make paintings look like sculptures and sculptures look lifelike and monumental. He painted over 400 human frescos on the Sistine ceiling and his statue of David is over 18 feet tall.
A Renaissance Man is one who has broad intellectual interests and is accomplished in areas of both the arts and the sciences. Leonardo was more passionate, you can see it in his art, you get an emmotional connection when viewing his peices. Although Michelangelo revolutionized the way we protray the structure of the human body, it is Leonardo that excels in not just one aspect of being a Renassiance man but several. I think Leo gets top buck here people.

Although Leonardo was also a great mathematician and scientist and inventor, that really has nothing to do with the comparison at hand. Nothing rivals The Pieta in life, beauty and sensuality. Michaelangelo, hands down!

Michelangelo!! Leonardo may have been a genius, but M's work was much more extensive and had a higher degree of difficulty.
Michelangelo was the better artist, painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer but Da Vinci was the greater creator! Da Vinci used his imagination like no other and his ideas are still being pondered today.
I think that they both were amazing, influencial artists, but I'd pick Leonanrdo Da Vinci over Michelangelo. Leo invented also, and took art to a new level. He studied dead bodies to see how they would work. But Michelangelo also made the people more built up and strong. :)
I like both of the artists. For me, It is too difficult for me to choose between them. Da Vinci, mastered more at a women's profile than a mans, but on the other hand, Michelangelo was more advanced with the man's profile than a woman's. Although, both artists were absolutely incredible in the structure of human bodies and expressions. That is why it is hard for me to choose. Just my opinion on that though.

Agreed Yvone, actually both were genius polymaths, Michelangelo beats Da Vinci is sculpting, as Da Vinci only planned one sculpture, and Michelangelo had a good bunch of masterpieces. In terms of painting, Leonardo's greatest hit was 'La Monalisa', Michelangelo himself said he didn't like painting, but heck, he made some of the best pieces out there, The Creation of Adam, The Last Supper, these 2 pieces together are worth more than any painting Leonardo did combined. In art both rocked, but Michelangelo worked his way through. (This goes for architecture as well.)
But let's not forget the sheer intelligence of Leonardo and his originality. I mean the man made plans to what seemed to be a plane, a robot-warrior, a viola-organista.
Both made a shock on the world, both were goddamn geniuses, both made names to themselves, we can compare their works, but we can't compare who was the better man.

This is a rather easy one. Leonardo Da Vinci wins hands down.
Michael Angelo was a master sculptor, painter, and Engineer. In fact some of his designs for engineering still stand today, and the techniques he came up with are still being used today in the construction of buildings.
But, Leonardo on the other hand, has not only created master pieces of art, but also practical solutions to modern day problems which are still being used till this very day. NASA uses Leonardo's designs for the robotic wrist which is still unrivaled in today's technological standards. The parachute, Early Tank, glider, underwater diving suit, just to name a few were all tested by current day engineers and they all worked. Also believe it or not, he set a standard for waste disposal for large buildings. That's not all, In the medical field, he had already designed the artificial artery valve, which is being used today in valve transplant surgery.
Both were geniuses, but Leonardo I must say, due to his contributions to not only art, but also to modern daily life, he far out classes, and completely eclipses Michael Angelo.

Da Vinci was a strange man, possibly due to his genius. Also Michelangelo was younger and more aggressive at self marketing. he had Da Vinci to learn from. Da Vinci was a notoriously good starter and poor finisher. However, when it came to just painting and sculpture,I think Michelangelo was better! they both made the world a richer place, however.

ok first of all, who said michelangelo painted better? He didn't know how to paint backgrounds (note that the people in the background are blurry.) and the heads aren't proportional. Ok he was awesome at sculpting but Leo only tried that once, and it was destroyed by french people... I think. But it was great before. And he was smarter, while michelangelo was probably mentally challenged. (my theory.)

Michaelangelo was commissioned throughout the years more than leonardo. Michaelangelo had more range than leonardo. However, leonardo's paintings had more depth.
It's really futile and unfair to compare the two, they were both genius masters of their craft.

i believe that Da Vinci was the greater of the two. he left a more lasting impact on more than just one thing. Michelangelo was a great artist, but Da Vinci was an Artist, engineer, and scientist. so i think Da Vinci gave more to us modern people.
There is no point to stating opinions as to who was greatest; they are both more than great, and that is adequate.
According to the philosopher Schopenhauer a true genius and artist has a disinclination to mathemathical, technical or scientific thinking being only concerned with the view of ideas of nature which cannot be exhausted or represented with reason but can only be viewed. Because of this incompatibility of these two types of thinking, Da Vinci would probably not be an artist at all, in his opinion, or only someone who was technically exceptional but not that real artist who only creates works to make possible the perception of ideas. I only apply his logic, he didn't make these claims, and sorry if I couldn't make it clear or if you find it ridiculous, but it's totally serious and even makes sense. You can see a distinction between the two, for one, Da Vinci was inclined to portray what he found rather than purely imagining it, but I would argue that Da Vinci probably still could have had his moments of pure vision...

I am a huge fan of leonardo but in terms of art all my favorite works are from michaelangelo. The pieta, statue of david, creation of adam and the sistine chapel are in my opinion are some of the best I've seen. Leonardo however had potential in so many fields like inventing, mathematics and disection would make me give the nod as the ultimate master however if it was purely art I would give it to michaelangelo. Da vinci was so amazing because of his lack of formal education and yet he was so ahead of his time. I only wish we will see his type of genius in our life time.

okay, leonardo da vinci is a pure genius. he was b4 his and our time. he was the most influential inventors in the history of life. he could tell us the stories of jesus and the world and life that he witnessed thru art. michelangelo was great as well. but i get alot of my artistic inspiration from da vinci.
you cant judge over the works of greatist minds of history just by watching something... heir work has many similarities and much more differences... one thing is sure they were the best... but two diffrent lives, characters, view of the world, leonardo was futurist, buonarotti was more intrested in present... you cant compare wool and iron as my grand grandfather would say it can have the same weight but never same weight and volume.....

Leonardo Da' Vinci is way way better than Michelangelo by far. His paintings were far more better and he was also very smart and invented a lot of things. Leonardo in my opinion is better. :)
Leonardo wins because their artwork is pretty close but thats only because leonardo was focused on all his other projects from writing to invention. If he had focused on just art he would have won.

Michelangelo has to be my favorite. Though Leonardo was an intellect with great ideas, he was a master painter he possessed passion. Michelangelo was a master sculptor and after all his work on the Sistine Chapel, no painter could match up, not because of the amount or size he painted. But because of the passion he had and constant devotion to new approaches to creating art for the glory of God.

Da Vinci was a true genius...but let's not forget that he wasn't a true creator. He did not invent the calculator, solar power, or helicopter...others did. Did he have brilliant and ahead of his time ideas? Yeah, but he didn't invent these things.
I'm not taking anything away from his genius; he was clearly ahead of his time. But ideas and inventions are different. I could toss around ideas about worm holes for time travel and genetic solutions for cancer, but until the invention is realized on my watch it's not my genius.
Michelangelo didn't have the same lofty ideas, but I'd argue that he created more in his lifetime...a more impressive body of art and architecture. This is mostly subjective and we are splitting hairs though.
